Good Morning, Sunshine!

Good Morning, Peeps! I woke up at 5:00 and stayed up. It takes a while for the sun to come up when you're waiting ...

The Morning Glories doing what they do best.
They have completely taken over the front porch. Some vines are dying and some are still sending out those nasty tendrils that twist though everything. Of course, they are full of bees. Bees are good, but not my favorite companions when I try to spend time on the porch. It all started years ago with one stray vine. Now, it is more like alien invaders.

Tomato slice babies this morning.
It has been 2 1/2 weeks since I planted that ripe tomato slice. IF I ever decide to try to plant tomatoes again, I will buy a couple vine-ripe tomatoes from the store and slice it up directly into the garden. No messing with seeds, or transplanting little plants and hoping I don't kill them, or worrying if the wind is too strong. The tomato was a nice fat one, so I know what the puppies will look like and how they will taste - no having to guess which ones are which. I loved the experiment, too bad it is so late in the season, nights are already getting cooler. I can hardly believe there are so many little plants! I wish I had thought to try this with a pepper plant - bell peppers make pretty house plants in the winter when a  person is craving green.

  1. Love the morning glories, but you do need to be careful where they grow. I am starting to get tomatoes and it is exciting, with any luck I will have to give some away. I think I will try that slice thing next year along with some store bought plantings. Rabbits were feasting on my newly planted little plants, saw on the internet to stick a plastic fork next to the plant. It worked, the rabbits stopped, I have no idea why, scared them some how I guess or maybe the smell.

    1. Never heard about the plastic fork thing. Good to know, although we have so few rabbits here because of the dogs. So happy for you that your tomatoes are a success! It's a good thing to get excited about!

    2. A handy tip, but tines up or tines down?

  2. This is great! Now, will you get actual tomatoes? (Don't laugh. I know very little about planting, plants, flowers, gardens etc.)

    1. No, probably won't get tomatoes - would be lucky if I got blossoms - it's a little too late in the season. If I had a greenhouse, I maybe could get tomatoes. They need warm nights as well as days.

    2. Try covering them with soft drink bottle cloches and move the pot to a sheltered spot, you might get tomatoes yet.

    3. I think they are already too big for the bottles. (or close)
I will pull all but one out of the pot before too long.

  3. I wish it was earlier in the season. I'd try the tomato slice trick. They look like healthy little plants. I love morning glories but haven't had any luck with them in recent years.

    1. The plants are very sturdy. Take my word for it - Glories just want to take over the planet.

  4. I've seen that idea and wondered if it really worked. Good job. Maybe bring in your plants over winter and see what happens. It's going to die outside anyway. There might be a chance it will survive. Another experiment

    1. Our winters are almost the standard 6 months of 'not growing anything' type of winter and I have a small house. Now ... if I had a huge house and a room to dedicate to plants ...

  6. Hooray for tomatoes! And it works just as well with bell peppers, which we call capsicums.
Love the red sun through the trees :)

    1. When will you start a few plants? It must be close to spring there, is it not?

    2. My soil isn't good enough, my flat id the northwest corner of the block so very hot, and I tried growing some in pots one year but keeping enough water to them is too hard, especially with water restrictions.

  7. Tomatoes are amazing. Please do a post about how it's done in the spring, OK.

  8. I love Morning Glories but agree that the bees would be a nuisance near the porch.

It never occurred to me to plant the slices. I always have started with store bought plants. I will be trying that next season as well.

    1. I suppose there are other things you can do that with, as well.
      Hmm ...
