Feeling Flat

I finally finished (as in totally finished) my novel. No, it's not a great American novel. It's just a love story. I have not sent this one for others to read. I seldom get feedback on my novels that are truly sincere if I get feedback at all. My best friend did tell me that one was "predictable" I re-read it later and agree; it now sits waiting for a re-write or the recycle bin. I'm not in the mood for it right now; it's not going anywhere soon. I may chop it into itty bitty pieces and feed it to y'all. ;-)

I like this one. Let the publisher tell me it's garbage or not. I need to figure out how to format it and do all the things you have to do before submission. I'm working on that. The worst part of it is waiting for them to let me know and it looks like it will be months. So I'll wait…

Anywho, it's left me feeling flat and let down. I loved most of my characters, didn't like one but then he's the one not to like. I'm going to miss them for a while until I find someone equally attractive (or hateful) to write about. I sit in front of my computer and the screen is blank and my mind says, "What?" and "Who?" and "What's going on?" The curser just blinks at me.

Don't worry, it will come to me. I know it will when I smell a certain smell or hear a certain song or see a picture that will bring images to mind and I will be busy once again. For tonight though I feel as bland as milk toast.

  2. What an amazing feat to finish such a large task. I don't think I could ever focus long enough to do that. I'm sure you'll have more characters waltz into your life when the time is right.

  3. Be proud of yourself for crossing the finish line, S., -- I not only don't have a novel in me, I have no desire to write one... too much work for 99% of the people out there, including me. xo

  4. I had heard that before, that an author, when finished with the book, misses the characters he/she created. I find it quite interesting and can easily believe it is true. When we watch a certain show on TV just because we are "used" to it's characters and miss them, that must be the same feeling. I congratulate you, my friend! Wonderful! The best part is that you can always create more, isn't it?

  5. So what do you do, just send it to a publisher and wait? When I read a book I get really into the characters and always miss them when I'm done. So I can see why you'd miss the ones you actually created.

I am having my book (memoir) edited right now and will be self publishing in August. Whether it's good, bad or indifferent... I already purchased a publishing package LOL... Sometimes you just have to WRITE and it makes you feel better, right?

I usually LOVE what you write Sharon. I love your style and I cannot wait to read your novel. Is it very long? What is the word count?

If you get a chance .. google 'Justin E Geary blog' and watch his (my son) trailer on his book. I know you're not into that type of book but it's really cool how one can market a book these days.

Good luck! I can't wait to see what you've written!!

  7. Finishing a book is like running a race I would think. It takes a lot of energy, emotional energy. It's no wonder you are a little worn out from it! Congrats on finishing it!
