Some kind of Dumpling

Last spring, Ruth sent me some seeds. I can't keep it straight if they are "Sweet Dumplings" or "Little Dumplings" but they are supposed to be a winter squash. I planted a couple seeds in with the tomato and pepper plants. All summer I looked at the garden, the tomato plant had gone in every direction. I never saw a squash plant. Of course, that tomato had taken over, even the pepper plants!

A couple of weeks ago, I happened to think about the squash and asked DH if there was ever any sign of it. Well, he had been wondering what that little striped thing was. I had neglected telling him about the seeds I had planted.

With the cold weather coming in, I asked him to bring in the little squash. I am amazed, I had looked and couldn't even find the plant, but, low and behold, there were these two tiny squash. I'm not sure if they will be good enough to eat. I'll try. Haha. Aren't they cute?

Change of subject: Have you ever looked at something so long that when it's missing, you still see it, kinda, sorta? I had a very pretty, pierced, sterling candy dish and I kept a pierced bon bon server in it. I kept it on my antique desk, since we picked it up. It's not there anymore. I can't think of a reason to change its placement, yet, it's gone. The top of the desk is a bit cluttered, so its absence wasn't obvious. I have no idea how long it's been gone - by the amount of dust, I would say it has been quite a long time. I have done a search for the most obvious locations, it's not here. That will drive me nuts for days. It wasn't a cheap item ... Sigh ...

Post Script:
I remember putting that book on the bowl, over a year ago when I found I couldn't read books anymore. I didn't notice the dish was missing then, but it must have been - to set the book on that bowl with the handles. Considering the dust, it would have to have been moved when one of my 'helpers' was, ahem, 'helping.' Maybe the one who helped herself to all the cash in my purse on her last day ... I wonder if I have other things missing? Sigh ...

  1. Cute little squash! I'm seeing a lot of the white squash and pumpkins this year. A fashion trend, I think.

It drives me nuts when I can't find something like your nut dish. If you had clutter on the desk could you have accidentally picked it up under or in between something like papers? I hope you find it.

  2. The squash are little cuties. As for you missing item......possibly under some of your paper work? That would be where I would be likely to find any missing items n my desk lol.

    1. Nope, not inside, I would have been afraid of crushing or denting it. :/

    1. I am going to try, as long as Ruth said this variety is very good. I got the seeds from her. :-)

  4. If you do get round to cooking/eating them - don't forget to save some seeds for next year.
Things turn up in the strangest places - the voice of experience speaking here lol. Then there is the resulting questioning- why on earth would I put that there......and when?? ~ Cathy

    1. I have been questioning myself, also looking all over (under, inside, behind) and all I'm finding is dust. If I ever find it, I will let you know. :-)

  5. Sigh. I still mourn a pewter cat which I suspect a helper helped herself to. No real intrinsic value (though it probably wasn't cheap) but a heap of sentimental value.
I do like your squash. Let us know how they taste.

    1. Sorry about your pewter cat. Why do people just take things? I hope they have their own private hell ...

  6. Your last sentence fills me with sorrow and reminds me of my mum's curio cabinet which used to be crammed full of things she gathered on her travels. When I went to visit her a couple of weeks before she died that cabinet was near empty and she didn't know where the things were. I suspect the same neighour who did mum's shopping in her last months. Mum would hand over her bank card and tell the neighbour to pick her up some milk and coffee when she did her own shopping. Neighbour did, but also used the card to pay for her own shopping!

  7. P.S. I've heard mini squashes don't have much flesh so instead of losing some when peeling, bake them whole, then scoop out the seeds before eating the squash by scraping it out of the skin with a spoon.

  8. Or cut them in half first to save the seeds for planting as Cathy suggests, then bake the halves.

  9. I do not trust caregivers who come into the house...or house cleaners either. My sister-in-law had one steal out of her purse and also put stuff on her credit card when she'd send her out to buy groceries for the house. Lost several caregivers that way. When my dad was in a Hospice home he even had money taken out of the wallet he insisted on having with him. I finally replace his cash with Monopoly money because he couldn't tell the difference. That was the end of the disappearing money. Best to find a place to lock up the things you care about, if you have help in the house again.

    1. It's sad that we can't trust everyone who is supposed to help us.
I hate having to hide my pretty things. :-(

  10. That's too bad, my Mother-in-law lost a piece of silver the same way. Love the little squashes.

  11. That's a bummer about your candy dish. A friend of mine hired household help once when she was a newlywed --- she lost all of her wedding presents and never had anyone ever help her again. :(

  12. The squashes are really cool, let us know how they are when it comes time to serve them. That is a shame about your candy dish, that is just wrong if someone took it.

I will continue looking for that dish, but no clue where anymore.

  13. I like the looks of the squash. Sorry for your loss of things you treasure. John doesn't trust anyone to come in to clean so we keep the dust until I get a spurt of cleaning.

    1. I think the squash are almost to cute to eat, but you better believe I will, I just hope they are mature enough for consumption. ,-)
I guess I was just too trusting, not any more ...

  15. i find this one very interesting .

this is fun story about your wait for your plantain's harvest .
reminded me my mom's worry about pepper plant which never grew well in her garden ,she always looked for it but it's roots were eaten by insects .
finding old things which we think are lost is always a pleasant surprise

  16. I am pleased these things happen to other people, not just me. I recently hunted for an antique I'd had in my possession for 40 years and now seems to have disappeared.

    1. Sorry to hear that, it doesn't help to know you are not alone though, does it? DH says it probably fell on the floor and broke and I threw it away. Nonsense, I keep silver even if it's scrap, haha!

  19. Oh my gosh...I did not realize that you had someone in that was supposed to be helping that took things from you. That is terrible. We used to investigate this sort of thing at the TBI where caregivers would still from the people they were working for. That is terrible. I hope that you just moved it or hubby did and you locate it soon. Pretty cool on the squash. I am house/bird/dog sitting again at my brothers and I have pulled a couple of peppers from his plants (frost coming) to use the seeds next yr. Think I will try my hand at growing things like that among my flowers.

    1. They have all sorts of dwarf plant seed for veggies that fit in your flower garden. You'll never be sorry for sharing the flower space with some good for you foods.
I don't know that the woman who took my money took the dish, I will continue to look for it.
It almost smells like snow out there to this afternoon, doesn't it? Chill wind!

That is so sad that someone might have stolen from you.
We let a young friend live with us for awhile rent free. When he left several items vanished with him. We haven't seen him since.
