Blueberries and New Wheels

Yesterday was a fluke, as we are fully into summer now. I woke (late) to a beautiful, breezy day. Even after I had breakfast and got dressed, the day was exceptional. I asked DH about the blueberries and he told me the first bush was ready for the first picking. (Drat! Father's Day, I knew my son would not be into picking berries on HIS special day.) I hated to have them go to waste. So ... I donned my oxygen tank and found my berry picking bucket.

The breeze kept me cool while I picked for a while, but my back was aching from standing still in one spot. Finally, I simply had to sit down. (Knowing full well there was nothing to hang onto to get myself up!) Then I crawled around, getting some of the lower berries. If the neighbors were looking through their binoculars, it must have been quite a show. I think I picked about half of the ripe ones on the bush when my skin was screaming at me about the sun. (My medication makes me photo sensitive) My bucket was getting heavy, so I decided that I had done enough.

I called DH to get help rising to my feet. And I called. And then I screamed. He was playing golf ...

This morning I was online at Amazon, getting wheels and a seat.
It should be here on Wednesday. Cute, huh?

Have a good day!

  1. I have one much like it, figure it will come in handy when I get older.

  2. You absolutely need your own wheels. Those walkers are really neat. I absolutely cannot stand in one spot without having awful back pain. I see those walkers and wish for one myself. The only thing I don't like about walkers is the handles are too low. Look and people pushing grocery carts, they're standing straight. Look at people pushing walkers, they're bent over. I don't like that, but I certainly like the seat idea. Everyday Amazon becomes more and more my go to place.

    1. I can't imagine carrying a chair, my O2 tank, my bucket and using my cane. I'm too wobbly to carry anything of any size anywhere.
I think the handles are adjustable. May not have to though, I'm short, lol.

  3. Good for you! I bet your new wheels come in really handy. That berry picking sounds like a lot of work even without the sun sensitivity thrown in. I hope you are enjoying the fruits of your labor.

    1. Except for heat and the backache - I don't mind berry picking. Wish I would have thought about it earlier - before the blackberries played out.

    1. I always try to be careful, Theresa. I am not silly or stupid enough to think I don't need the additional help. Some may see it as a sign of giving in to my age, but I'm really not into asking for a broken hip. I'm home alone far too often. :-)

  6. I would never be too vain to use whatever I need to get around. I'm turning 80 next month so I never know what is around the corner. Thank goodness they make these products to help us.

    1. Blueberries have to be the easiest thing to grow - if you can keep the dog from digging them up. LOL! I really am enjoying mine, now that they have become established and Jill grew up. I tried strawberries with unfortunate results.

  8. When I read what you said about standing in the one spot etc etc I realised you are a kindred spirit with many of the problems I have although I don't need oxygen for which I am thankful.
I have two walkers, one with four wheels, a seat and a basket for carrying things and one with 3 wheels which is easier to use if I need to do in the house. If I ever get to the shops I need the one with the seat so I can sit every few minutes.
I don't complain about getting old as I am grateful for the extra years I have had but at times I could do without some of the aches and pains that are with me daily.

    1. I looked at the 3 wheel walkers and thought I would end up in the bushes. I doubt if I try to use it in the house - I use an O2 concentrator and I would be forever getting my hose jerked from my nose.

  9. I like it- I hope you got the purple one! I like the seat, too. Amazon is my favorite store. I hate going to the mall anymore. Now if they would just do my grocery shopping too, I would be in heaven.

Amazon is handy, all right - maybe too handy. I know what you mean about the grocery shopping.

  10. Blueberries ripe for the picking is a vision in itself. You out amongst them as you have described is a bit worrisome. May your new wheels assist on your next time out. Hope it's a sturdy one that takes bumps well when the ground is uneven.
What did you do with your delicious pickings?

    1. It won't be long and I will get to try out the new wheels! Yes, the ground around here is so uneven, I'm hoping the rollator will make my trek outside much smoother. The one I picked had the best reviews. I froze some of the berries and I confess that I ate quite a lot of them. Before I know it, I can eat a pint of them like popcorn. Great frozen treat, but I do want to make a pie this year.

  12. Hi, I'm River, dropped in via Mimsie's. I'm not yet at "walker" stage, (I'm only 63), but I've seen plenty of them around and know for sure that when I get one, it will have adjustable height handles so I'm not stooped over pushing it along.
I like the ones with seats, so handy for taking a break and there's a carrier unser the seat to stash your purse and water bottle.

    1. Hi River! Thanks for stopping by!
The handles on this one are adjustable. I set it up on the second lowest hole and it will work just fine. There are about 8 holes in the handles. :-) It's good and sturdy - only took me about 10 minutes to get it set up and that's because I couldn't fine the kitchen shears right away. The handles and back support were strapped to the frame for shipping. There is a bag under the seat, but I think I will have DH help me make something to set my o2 tank in. (I usually wear it)
