Passing the time

As if I didn't have anything to do, I thought I would get my legs stretched out on the bed to help with the circulation in my feet. I thought I could park in bed part of the day and color. I started looking at coloring books for adults on Amazon. Wow, I didn't know how popular those color books are! I had a bit of trouble deciding just what to order. I ordered 3!

Do any of you do this? Know anyone that does? What do they use for the colors? Gel pens, watercolor markers, permanent markers, or colored pencils? Is one preferable over the other? I have colored pencils, but I'm really not a fan, although they might be better as my hands do shake. I don't know. I thought it might help me concentrate on controlling that as long as I was stretching the old veins.

Seeing sky, seeing sun, life is good!

  1. I have tried the coloring books with both colored pencils and gel pens. I wasn't particularly fond of either. BUT I know few people who are crazy about the adult coloring books. I don't think there will be any in between. You like them or you don't. Hope you do.

  3. They are quite popular but I haven't tried to color in them. When I was a little girl my two favorite things were the biggest box of crayolas mom could find plus the thickest coloring books she could find! Mom also bought huge rolls of brown butcher paper for me to paint on with tempera paints.
Go with whatever you are comfortable with Sharon. I believe that I would use the thin markers because they would color more easily.
    Have fun and enjoy~

    1. I used to make my own doodles and color them in, that's why I thought about these. Thanks for your suggestion.

  4. I have pencils and gel pens. I think the pens work better. But I don't find them relaxing
I feel like I should be doing something more productive. So I feel like I'm wasting time

    1. I suppose, you do have your yarn crafts when you relax. I can't really do that. I won't need my left hand to color.

  5. I've known several people who have really enjoyed doing them - I'll have to give it a try sometime. But my problem is, is that I never liked to color inside the lines... :-)

PS: THANK YOU for your kind comments on the loss of our boy Josh, and especially for your friendship!

  6. I was given a book once but I had no patience for filling in colour on a picture someone/or something drew. They are everywhere now....I noticed Lens Mill had a whole rack of them. Some folks find them soothing to work on.

  7. Cindy has a few and she uses colored pencils also, she only pulls them out occasionally.

  8. I've bought a couple for my daughter, she uses colored pencils. She's a big fan of the late David Bowie and I got her a book a bout him to color.

  9. Several months back when I was having Platelets injected there were two girls doing this and offered me a page to color. I didn't want to as I was just using the time to relax but they seemed to be really into it

    1. I hear that it's very relaxing, but I suppose it's different stroke sort of thing. Some folks drink to relax, haha.

  10. Never liked to color as a child but I tried this twice and just could not get into it. I know several folks that pass their time coloring, I rather have a paint brush in my hands. Enjoy and be sure and show us what you do.

    1. If I can do it fairly decently, of course I'll show it. It's been a while. :-)

  11. I prefer doodling in colors instead of using coloring books, but it's all good.

  12. I've looked at adult colouring books and I'm amazed at how complicated the pictures are. I bought a couple and it took me the better part of a day to get even half a picture coloured, because I'm a perfectionist and can't go outside the lines etc. When I stopped not only were my hands hurting, but also my shoulders. I gave the books away.

    1. I worry a little about getting overly enthusiastic, too. It could happen. I better pace myself. :-)

  13. I used colour pencils, you get a better variation of shade with them, gel pens and markers are just one colour, you can't go light or dark with them.

    1. Thanks, River. I never have used gel pens, markers - yes. ,-)

  14. I liked the gel, but it got used up far faster than colour pencils. Over a period of time I used all the colouring items you mentioned. Still have most of them but am looking for someone to give them to. Eyesight and posture problems made me cease colouring. I gave some of the colouring books away and am yet to find someone who wants the implements.

    1. Neighborhood kids? I was looking and that stuff could add up to a lot of money.

I figured I would have to rest my eyes every so often. Thanks for in-put!

  15. I almost bought one myself while out in the shops a long time ago, but then I thought, colouring books for adults...who does that? Instead I got one for my niece. It's proven quite popular indeed though as more adults get in on it. Greetings.

    1. Looking at the many listed on Amazon, I believe there is more interest than even I thought. They even have 'adult' adult coloring books. I can't picture myself buying one that was filled with naked body parts, but someone must get a kick out of them. HaHa!

  16. Good eye sight would be a reason for me to,avoid this and I really see no point. I took up learning Spanish and am loving it.

    1. Everyone has their thing. I don't even know if I'll like coloring in my old age. Do you have plans on vacationing where you will need to speak Spanish? That would be so cool!

  17. Aren't these fun? I got one a couple of years ago, colored a few pictures then lost interest:( But I think all adults need a color book:)

  18. I love colouring but these books take a very long time to complete a picture. They are very detailed!! I use pencils because anything else would leak through the paper?

    1. I believe the pages are blank on the back, leak-through would not be a problem. I don't mind if they take time.

  19. Hi Sharon. I have done these in the past. I like the pencils better than the gel pens, because the look is more subtle. Did you know they also make note cards and post cards too? Nice to be able to send a piece of artwork to someone special. They can be found on Amazon.

  20. Adult colouring books are a fad which seems to be gaining rather than losing popularity. I would love to do some but my fine motor control is shot so I just admire other people's artistry.

    1. I shake a lot, but with colored pencils I think there is a little more control. I wouldn't dare try to use a paint brush! Ha Ha. (Unless I wanted modern art and that would be such a waste of materials!) :-)

  21. I'm sorry your hands shake. That would stink. I found the adult coloring books too expensive, so I bought one for kids picturing lots of cute animals. With the inclusion of word search puzzles and the like, plus some stickers, it really appeals to my inner child. I bought a big box of 64 crayons, too. Have fun coloring, whatever you decide to use. Now that you've reminded me of this simple joy I may pull it out this evening after I'm done writing fiction for the day and my significant other has gone to bed. ~grin~ Be well!

    1. I have been playing with some cheap colored pencils my son left behind, doing a thing I printed off the web. Works fairly well, but they seem grainy.

      Nice to see you again!

  23. My wife has a few books. She uses both pencils and gel pens. The pens are more vibrant and the pencils more "surreal" looking so I think it depends on what you want the image to look like in the end. We have framed a few that she especially likes.

    1. Thanks! It sounds like she really enjoys doing it! Nice enough to frame, boy, I can only hope to do that well!

  24. I don't color, but it sure looks relaxing. I think I am in one of those books, though. Shoshanah Marohn did one called Birds in Beards and a bunch of others. Hers look like they would be fun. Check her out.

  25. I love to sit and color in these books. Gel pens are my choice. At first I was a fanatic about coloring the pages but now it is only a seldom occurrence.

    1. I think that could be me, a fanatic at first. I am somewhat unhappy with the old colored pencils, but my new stuff should be here sometime today! Exciting! Haven't seen you for a while, I hope you have been busy and not unwell.

  26. My former DIL tried to get me interested in this... I said, If I want to color I will color in kids coloring books.. I like the ones with nice thick lines and loads of space to put my colors (no talent there! lol) But I do love to dabble with drawing pictures on my iPad. (no talent there, either... just kids stuff.. lol)
